Rudradaman I

the Junagadh Inscriber

Rudradaman I was an Indian king active in the 2nd c. AD during the Kushan period from the state of Saka. Died of natural causes.

Historical Note

Saka king who restored Sudarshana Lake in Gujarat — destroyed by a storm — at his own expense. His Junagadh rock inscription (150 AD) is the first long Sanskrit prose work, replacing Prakrit as the language of royal record.
