Indian Mythology
Surya
the Sun God
Surya is an Indian god of sun, associated with the realm of heaven. Surya belongs to the first generation of the pantheon. Roughly equivalent to Apollo in cross-pantheon mapping. Symbolised by the chariot.
Historical Note
The Sun crosses heaven in a chariot drawn by seven horses, driven by the legless charioteer Aruna. Father of Yama, Yamuna, the Ashvins, and — by an Iliad-worthy seduction — Karna of the Mahabharata.
