Indra

King of the Devas — Lord of Storm and War

Indra is an Indian god of war, associated with the realm of heaven. Indra belongs to the first generation of the pantheon. Roughly equivalent to Zeus in cross-pantheon mapping. Symbolised by the vajra.

Historical Note

King of the Devas of Svarga, wielder of the vajra-thunderbolt. Slew the drought-dragon Vritra and released the seven rivers. Most-praised god in the Rig Veda; by the Puranic age he had become an embarrassed cuckold of his own pantheon.
