Indian Mythology

Chandra

the Moon

Chandra is an Indian god of moon, associated with the realm of heaven. Chandra belongs to the first generation of the pantheon. Roughly equivalent to Selene in cross-pantheon mapping. Symbolised by the crescent.

Historical Note

Moon-god who married all twenty-seven daughters of Daksha — the lunar mansions — but loved only Rohini. Daksha cursed him to wane; Shiva mitigated it; hence the moon waxes and wanes forever.
