Historical Note
Of low birth — son of a barber or a Sudra woman — he overthrew the Shishunaga dynasty and built an empire stretching from Bengal to the Punjab. Greek sources speak of his army of 200,000 foot and 6,000 elephants. Slain when Chandragupta Maurya rose.
