Chinese Battles

Zhizhi

The Battle of Zhizhi was fought in 36 BC in Steppe during the Western Han era, a siege engagement against Xiongnu. It ended in victory for the Chinese side.

Historical Note

Chen Tang and Gan Yanshou marched without imperial orders into Sogdiana and stormed Zhizhi Chanyu's fort. The chronicle remarks that some defenders fought in a 'fish-scale formation' — possibly the lost Roman legionaries of Carrhae.
