Janus

Deus Ianuarum — God of Beginnings

Janus is a Roman god of beginnings, associated with the realm of earth. Janus belongs to the minor generation of the pantheon. Symbolised by the two faces.

Historical Note

Janus had no Greek equivalent — he was uniquely Roman. The doors of his temple in the Forum remained open in wartime and closed in peace. They were closed only three times in centuries.
