Rama was an Indian king active in the 10th c. BC during the Vedic Age period from the state of Ayodhya. Died: renounced.

Historical Note

Seventh avatar of Vishnu and ideal king. Exiled fourteen years for a stepmother's vow, he wandered south, lost Sita to the demon-king Ravana of Lanka, and burned his city to recover her. The Ramayana is his story.
