the Shepherd of Honor

Historical Note

Han envoy held by the Xiongnu for nineteen years. They demanded he defect and starved him; he chewed his sheepskin coat. Sent to herd rams in the far north — 'come back when these give milk.' Eventually returned to a Han hero's welcome.
