Kharavela

Conqueror of Kalinga

Kharavela was an Indian king active in the 2nd c. BC during the Post-Maurya period from the state of Kalinga. Died of natural causes.

Historical Note

Jain king of Kalinga who reversed Ashoka's conquest a century later. His Hathigumpha inscription — carved into an elephant-cave — lists thirteen years of campaigns: south against the Tamils, west against the Satavahanas, north against the Greeks, then back to Magadha for the Jain sage's tooth.
