Devabhuti

the Last Shunga

Devabhuti was an Indian emperor active in the 1st c. BC during the Post-Maurya period from the state of Shunga. Was assassinated.

Historical Note

Last Shunga emperor. Murdered in 73 BC by his own Brahmin minister Vasudeva Kanva, who replaced him on the throne. Reportedly killed by a slave-girl disguised as his queen — the Puranas relish the detail.
