Dionysius I was a Greek tyrant active in the 4th c. BC during the Classical period based in Syracuse. Died: poisoned.

Historical Note

Brutal tyrant of Syracuse for 38 years. Invented advanced siege machinery, fought Carthage to a standstill, and wrote tragedies. Died after winning a poetry contest — wine or poison.
