Lao Tzu

the Old Master

Lao Tzu was a Chinese philosopher active in the 6th c. BC during the Spring & Autumn period from the state of Zhou. Died of natural causes.

Historical Note

Royal archivist of Zhou. Disgusted by decline, he rode west on an ox toward the frontier. The gate-keeper begged him for wisdom before he vanished — he wrote the Tao Te Ching on the spot and disappeared.
