Egyptian Pharaohs
Necho II
the Canal-Cutter
Necho II was an Egyptian pharaoh active in the 7th c. BC during the Late Period period from the state of 26th Dynasty. Died of natural causes.
Historical Note
Built a fleet of triremes, began the canal from Nile to Red Sea (eventually finished by Darius), and dispatched a Phoenician expedition that — Herodotus says — circumnavigated Africa, three years before they came home through Gibraltar.
